Windfall Trail/Montana Creek Trail
13.5 miles long
Very little elevation gain
4:35 minutes of hiking.
On June 9, 2006, we hiked this trail: Craig Johring, Caleb Unruh
The unique aspect of this trail is that you need to leave your vehicle out the road on the Windfall Creek Trailhead. Then you walk back to Juneau via the two trails. It's an awesome trail that never gets old, but is constantly changing.
Bears- We did not see any bears, but found fresh black bear prints on the trail.
Here's our timeline:
9:16: Started Windfall Trail (You drive out the road, and turn Right on the dirt road right before the Herbert River)
10:00: Arrived at Windfall Creek and checked out the creek for Sockeye Salmon (there were none).
10:20 Got back on the Windfall trail.
10:41: Arrived at the Windfall Cabin. It is the coolest cabin that you could imagine. It sits on an awesome lake with a dock. You can reserve the cabin and stay in it overnight, but the cabin is booked 6 months in advance. However, anyone can hang out at the cabin every day from 10:00-5:00 p.m. There is a tent site where you can put up as many as three tents. The spot is right on the water, away from the cabin. You can't reserve the tent site. To find the tent site, at the top of the stairs leading to the cabin, you go the opposite direction as you'd go to get on the Montana Creek Trail. This trail will dead-end at the tent site.
12:00: After hiking the wrong way for an hour we started on the trail. The big thing you need to do is follow the trail on the north side of the lake. The trail is very well marked, and is planked most of the way.
2:00 Arrived at Spalding Meadows. It is awesome.
3:06 Arrive on the Forest Service Road along Montana Creek.
3:30 Arrive on the Montana Creek Road in Juneau where we called Jason Coorts for a ride.
